starting the journey: essential decisions

Diagnosis and early treatment

  • The early part of Lana’s journey saw her being diagnosed with mild-to-moderate ADHD
  • Following diagnosis, Lana’s parents were given training to help them manage her ADHD, and Lana was given psychoeducation
  • During this initial assessment process, Dr Martins interviewed Lana and her parents, but did not contact Lana’s teacher

Reassessing treatment and diagnosis

  • One-and-a-half years later, Lana’s parents worried that she had not made enough progress as a result of her treatment
  • Speaking with Lana’s teacher at this point offered Dr Martins a whole new perspective on Lana’s impairment levels
  • During reassessment, with this new information now taken into account, Dr Martins diagnosed Lana’s ADHD as moderate-to-severe, and modified her treatment as a result

Key learning

Ensure accurate diagnosis by gathering information about your patient’s impairments from multiple sources. Inaccurate diagnosis can result in sub-optimal treatment.
